How To Ease Overwhelm And Get Sh*t Done

How To Ease Overwhelm And Get Sh*t Done

Have you ever had those moments where you have so much on your plate that it almost feels impossible to accomplish everything? Maybe you do what I do and decide to take care of all of these things at once – like stopping mid-sentence in an email to text my fiance to pick up dog food, while simultaneously thinking about the meeting I have in 5 minutes.

Our to-do lists can get long, quick and before we know it we’re in full panic mode trying to accomplish everything at once. Thoughts like “I have so much to do” or “Omg I’m so overwhelmed” start swirling around in our head. It’s in these moments that we have a choice. We can choose to give into the fear and continue to act in a state of panic, which will surely result in sub-par work, OR we can decide to re-evaluate and choose a new approach.

Here are 3 ways to eliminate the overwhelm and get sh*t done:

1. Prioritize Your Health.

Healthy habits are the first thing to go when we’re feeling overwhelmed. We tell ourselves that we don’t have time to work out today, because there’s too much to do. When we sacrifice our healthy habits for work, we’re doing a huge disservice to ourselves, our business and the people around us.

The work is never as good when you’re running on 5 hours of sleep and mac & cheese. The mental impact of poor habits is even greater. When you’re trying to get work done with an anxiety and stress filled brain, you won’t get the results you want. We’ve talked about this before, but it’s worth restating – when you’re acting out of fear, you never get what you want. And trust me, when you’re acting out of panic, overwhelm and stress, you’re acting out of fear.

Decide what 5 habits make you feel your best and don’t compromise them for anything. Commit to them every single day and make them your #1 priority. If you’re feeling your best, you will do your best work. Guaranteed.

2. Choose Your Top #3.

What are the top 3 things on your to-do list that will make you feel the most accomplished? It’s surprising, but it’s often the small tedious tasks that wind up taking the most time. Have you ever had 8 hours pass and even though you felt busy, you don’t feel like you accomplished much? Often, we chose to tackle the small, easy tasks first, which makes us feel like we’re being productive, but in reality we’re not making any real impact on our business.

So ask yourself, what are the three things I could do today that would make the biggest impact? What are the big things that will make the biggest difference in your life? If you tackle those first, the little tasks will feel fun and easy. When you work with intention, you will soon see huge changes in your life and career.

3. Say no.

This is such a tough one. But if you want to get sh*t done with a smile on your face, you need to start saying no to extraneous things. This might mean skipping your friend’s kid’s jungle themed birthday party. Or canceling a dinner date so you can watch Schitts Creek in peace. I don’t suggest you become flaky, but I do think it’s important to recognize when you’re stretching yourself too thin.

If you’re being asked to do something you don’t have the mental capacity for, and you have the ability to say no, say no. You need to take care of yourself first, not other people. The people in your circle will understand, and if they don’t they might not be a healthy addition to your life.

Try saying no to the things that don’t serve you. And don’t be alarmed, if you’re anything like me, you’ll instantly feel bad when you tell your friend you can’t babysit her chihuahua. And that’s okay. Recognize that you’ve gotten into a people pleasing cycle and you need to break it, for the sake of your own mental health. The more you flex your “no” muscle, the easier it’ll get and the better you’ll become at establishing boundaries.

The next time you start to feel that all too familiar feeling of overwhelm, take a deep breath and decide to choose again. You are in control and you have the ability to prioritize your life into order again. Being stressed out and busy doesn’t make you accomplished. Accomplishing things makes you accomplished. I promise, you can be happy and calm, and still get sh*t done.

Stop Comparing Your Life to Others

Stop Comparing Your Life to Others

We all know the feeling – the feeling when you’re scrolling through social media and you see that your cousin just made it to her 7th year at the same company and is now getting her fourth promotion. Or maybe a girlfriend from college just got engaged, adopted a puppy and bought a house in the same week.

When you see other people succeeding, do you ever find yourself thinking negative thoughts about them or their situation? Maybe you find yourself criticizing or rationalizing why they’re doing so well and you’re *not*. These feelings are totally normal and come from a belief that there isn’t enough to go around. This is also known as a “lack mentality”. We think that because someone else is succeeding, there is therefore less available to us. Obviously this is simply not true.  I’m going to show you how you can stop comparing your life to others, and start living your life for you.

Use other’s success to ignite inspiration.

The next time you see a friend succeeding, change your perspective. Instead of thinking thoughts like “Why can’t I have that?” decide to view their success as an example of what is possible for you. You can have that and you will, so there’s no need to harbor any negative feelings. Your friend is making 6 figures at 26? Amazing!! As soon as you see a friend succeeding, celebrate them! Take joy in their accomplishment, because if it’s possible for them then it’s possible for you.

Enjoy the middle part.

Jim Carrey once said, “I wish everyone could get everything they ever dreamed of, so they can see that it’s not the answer.” Sometimes we are so busy rushing through the motions of life, striving for more money and more recognition that we forget what the point is. The point is not to get rich for the sake of getting rich or to get married for the sake of getting married. The point is to be happy. And this joy can be found by enjoying the journey, or “the middle part” as we like to call it. This is the time when you’re putting in the work and fueling your faith, but haven’t yet reached your goal – this is the best part. This is where all the fun is!

Imagine if you woke up tomorrow with everything you ever wanted, what would you do? You’d likely enjoy it for a bit, but then you’d be inclined to find a new goal or new purpose. As humans, we were made to grow and evolve. I believe when we stop striving for growth, is when we often suffer with feelings of sadness and anxiety about our futures. So when you catch yourself wishing you were further along, remind yourself that the middle part is the best part.

Refocus your attention onto your own life.

It’s so easy to take our own accomplishments for granted. But, at some point you dreamed of being where you’re at now. Your life may not seem abundant, but there could be someone out there scrolling through your feed and using you as inspiration. So what can you do to improve? What is one thing you can do today to make you feel proud?

As soon as you refocus your attention onto your own life, you will remember how far you’ve come and you’ll continue to work towards becoming a better version of yourself. Not because you’re trying to impress people on social media, but because you want to feel fulfilled and joyful, and as we know, that comes from personal growth.

The next time you see an engagement post, promotion post or an “I’m so excited to announce…” post, defy the temptation to sulk, and drop a little love in their inbox! Everything you want is coming, and their success doesn’t change that.

Start seeing your goals as little gifts you ordered online. You don’t have to worry about when they’ll arrive or why someone else got theirs first. You get to be happy for the people around you, and excited for all the good that’s coming your way.

How to Find Joy in the Hustle

How to Find Joy in the Hustle

When we’re in the thick of it, it’s hard to find moments of joy. Whether we’re striving for a promotion or enduring growing pains in our own business, it’s tough to stay joyful when we’re struggling. In these times it’s often much easier to complain about how tired we are, or focus on how far we have to go. But, if we’re getting caught up in the “grind” of the day to day then we’re completely missing the point.

Here are 3 simple ways to find joy in the hustle at the present moment:

1- Acknowledge everything that’s going right.

Let’s say you’re business is struggling, your car needs new tires, you’ve been working 10 hour days and you’ve eaten microwaved mac and cheese every night this week. It would be so easy to go down a spiral of feeling crushed and sorry for yourself. It would be so easy to complain about how nothing’s going right and you have no idea what you’re doing.

But, these thoughts and words will only cause more agonizing feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. These feelings will not trigger the actions you need to take to get what you want. Instead of fueling your sadness with more negative thoughts, focus in on everything going right. Take 5 minutes everyday to write down 5 things that are going well in your life. You may live in a city with a ton of business opportunities, or you may have a supportive family who can help when things get tough. As soon as you start looking for the good things in your life, not only will you feel better and start taking action, but more good things will begin to flow into your life. What you focus on, you attract more of. So stop buying confetti for your pity party and start acknowledging all of the good things happening right now in your life.

2- Think back to why you started.

As entrepreneurs, it’s so easy to feel like we’re never doing enough. We’re told we need to put in the grind and hustle our way through the work days, so that one day we can enjoy the fruit of our labor. I personally couldn’t disagree more. If we’re not having fun, what is the point? You likely started your business because you were passionate about something, you were excited and joyful about the start of something new. That’s the energy you need to bring to your business everyday. Remind yourself every day why you started and feel those feelings of excitement. You can do this by writing down your “why” on a post it note and putting it somewhere visible, or making a vision board filled with photos and quotes that remind you why you started . As long as it brings up those feelings of excitement and joy when you see it, then it’s doing the trick.

3- Play more.

When we become adults, we start to see things we did for fun, such as sports or extracurricular activities, as things we don’t have time for anymore. This is even more true for big dreamers and doers, like yourself. Because you likely think you should be spending your time doing something constructive. But the thing is, having fun is incredibly constructive. When you’re having fun, you are creating feelings of joy that are so powerful. You’re creating the energy you need to keep moving forward. Making time to have fun allows you to recharge your batteries and bring more success to your professional and personal life. So go on bike ride, play with your dog, try out for the local musical, take a dance class, go to a comedy club, join a kickball team – whatever is fun and thrilling to you. Your business will thank you.

Stated simply, the more joyful you are, the faster you’ll see your goals manifest. When you’re joyful, you take inspired action which is ten times more powerful than the desperate, fearful action many of us fall prey to. You see, many of us are hungry for success, because we think we’ll feel happy once we have it. We think we’ll feel better once we’re making a lot of money, have X number of clients, get married, buy a house, etc. We think these achievements will make us feel happier, more important, and more fulfilled. But the thing is, you can feel those feelings now. You don’t have to wait. Decide today to feel the feelings of accomplishment, fulfillment and joy you long for. Relish them, journal them and meditate on them. Before you know it, the physical things you desire will take form.  Decide now to view your life from a place of joy – joy in knowing that everything you want is taking shape and the feelings you’re striving for are already yours.

3 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Goals

3 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Goals

As we begin 2020, New Year’s resolutions are top of mind. Whatever area of your life you’re hoping to improve, it’s important to remember that this journey is not going to be perfect. You may miss a day of working out or your business may not grow at the rate you hoped, but that doesn’t mean you’re not moving in the right direction.

Here are three ways to stick to your goals in the new year:

Remind yourself daily of where you’re going.

Every morning, take a few minutes to remember where you want to be. What does your dream life look like and more importantly how does it feel?It is sometimes so easy to get caught up in the logistics of what our dream life looks like and we miss the whole point of the exercise. The point is to feel good. We want to start each day with gratitude for the present moment, while also establishing hope in our futures. Whether you’re writing this out, meditating on your vision or saying a prayer – just make sure the process makes you feel good. And please don’t wait until you’ve fallen off the wagon or are in full panic mode to take this time for yourself. If this practice is done consistently, you won’t have frequent moments of panic. You’ll be confident in knowing this is all part of the journey.

Embrace Failure.

Every time you make a mistake, decide to see this as a detour in the right direction. Every seemingly wrong turn brings you one step closer to where you want to be, so embrace them. These events often teach us something we need to learn or make us more resilient & committed in achieving our goals. Sometimes these failures are guiding us in a way we can’t even comprehend yet. Have you ever looked back on a seemingly missed opportunity and were thankful it didn’t work out? It’s often hard to see in the moment, but trust that you are moving forward and embrace the journey.

Establish Your Why.

I want you to take five minutes to answer these questions and really feel into this.

  • If you don’t make this change, how will your life look in five years? How will this affect your family? How will this affect your life?
  • How will your life change if you do make this change? Who will this affect? What people will you help?

How did the answers to these questions make you feel? I want you to hold onto these feelings and fall back on them when you’re searching for motivation. When your alarm goes off at 5am to go on that run, I want you to think back to how this change will affect your family and your life.

Remember why this is important and why this needs to happen now. Sometimes our goals feel so personal, but often they have a much larger effect than we realize. You have such a powerful effect on the world around you. So if you’re not going to do it for yourself, focus on who you need to do it for. Your family, your community, the people you want to help – they need you to step up and step into the person you were meant to be.

How To Attract More Clients

How To Attract More Clients

With the rise of entrepreneurs, it can often feel like everywhere we turn, someone is trying to sell us something. While there is no shame in selling, it can be difficult. Whether you’re a partner, business owner, influencer, or affiliate marketer there is an effective way to sell that won’t leave you feeling slimy.

You know the slimy salesperson I’m talking about, right? This person is trying so hard to make the sale, and the more he talks & harder he pushes, the more you want to run in the other direction? This is because this kind of behavior is a signal to you that this person doesn’t actually believe in their product.

Instead of fighting for clients or pressuring buyers, let’s talk about how to attract real people into your brick and mortar or online business. Here are two things you can do today, to completely transform your business and attract more clients.

Sell Yourself (not your product or service)

We’ve all been at those networking events where every interaction seems to be forced and fake. People immediately start uptalking their work, flashing their business cards, and trying to sell you on their product. Just like the slimy sales guy, what do you immediately want to do? RUN.

Instead of trying to sell your product, focus on selling yourself. Be real, honest and genuine. You could spend an hour talking to a potential client about your shared love of ethnic food and The Black Keys, and at the end of the conversation they’ll want to develop a relationship with you because they like you. Odd’s are there are a million other people doing the exact same thing you do, so what’s different about your business? You.

The point here isn’t to win people over for the sake of making a profit. Be authentic and make genuine connections, because that’s the kind of person you want to be. That being said, these connections will affect the quality of your life and your business. Your authenticity will be a representation of who you are and the work you do.

Give Freely

At some we were made to believe that we can’t give our knowledge or time away for free, because then people won’t have a need to buy from us. This is so, so wrong.

The more you give to the people around you, with zero expectations, the better you’ll feel and the faster your business will grow. To clarify, we’re not giving to others in hopes they’ll buy from us. We’re giving to others because we believe our time, product, advice, etc. can help this person grow.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “What you give comes back to you ten-fold”? Well this is no exception. When you give for the sake of giving and you believe in your business, your business will naturally reap the rewards. It might not be in the way you expect, but this generosity will always come back to you.

By redirecting your attention on to cultivating real relationships and giving freely to the people around you, you will effortlessly attract the clients and customers you want to serve. Give these tips a try in 2020 and watch your business transform.
